Tackling Two

A blog update!! Man, can’t believe I have the time to do this now, hahaha! Well, I totally failed to do my obligatory posts for the past two months and I guess we all know why. 😏

So, what has changed since my last update back in June? Mom and sis flew back two weeks ago… 😔 I don’t know how it all happened so quickly this time. It’s crazy because Dylan turned three months old three days ago and I’m like WHATTT?! Seriously. He’ll be a teenager before I know it.

Meanwhile, there’s the challenge of taking care of both of my kids at home when Naomi’s not in child care. Aha! I dreaded that day to arrive before mom and sis flew back. I wasn’t certain if I could cope. But I knew that I had no choice but to cope. I had to do it. I’d learn how to do it. And master it I will.

Guess what? Turned out I didn’t freak out as much as I thought I would on my first day with them alone. Sure, there were some meltdowns from each of them and my heart raced while (1) trying to push a bobbling head to my breast and soothe a whining and crying toddler at the same time, snot all over her face (2) yelling at aforementioned toddler to stop climbing up the TV unit while carrying a sleeping baby, which resulted in the baby crying in shock ‘cos of my screaming (3) trying to cook with two crying kids at the same time and the ultimate (4) trying to make them nap at the same time.

I must admit, this crazy thingy called parenthood IS challenging; especially when a child is sick (don’t even go there!). But, I think it isn’t so bad after all. Most probably because I have such a good support system from Mr S, lol! 😙 Our tough days still end with some cuddles and shut eyes. Although not quality ones like the ones we had BEFORE we had kids 😏 And we still wake up in the morning with a brand new day ahead of us with smiles, giggles and hugs from the kids. So, I really thank God for this; the tough but fulfilling days that we have.

It’s true when they say:

The days are long but the years are short.

Welcome, Baby Dylan!

Hiii!! Sorry for the brief hiatus. I was busy giving birth and caring for a newborn baby, lol!!!

So yes, the baby is finally here!!! It’s a boy and Mr S and I named him Dylan Gabriel Wai-Zhun Soong. He weighed a decent 3.32kg when he was born, hahaha! No wonder I felt like my tummy was about to explode towards the end of my pregnancy. And those stretch marks…!! 😱 I only had very few when I had Naomi but when I was carrying Dylan, they just popped up every week in my last trimester. Oh well, they are my proud battle scars!

One thing you get a lot when people know you’re pregnant with your second one is that they’ll tell you it’ll be a lot easier with the second one. Some make it sound like the baby will slide out of you just like that!

So, I went into the birthing suite with the expectation that it’s gonna be so much easier this time. But goshhhh, was I wrong! I certainly dilated a lot faster but still, the baby wasn’t in a good position so we waited a good 12 hours since I went into the hospital before he finally came out and greeted me with his sepet eyes, lol!!! Also went through the whole epidural and suction ordeal ‘cos he didn’t turn and wasn’t coming down the birth canal as smoothly as expected.

Anyway, the important thing is that he’s out, lol! And he’s a healthy baby! That’s all that matters.

Dylan newborn

Welcome, little one!!!

Naomi meets Dylan

Naomi was quite pleased to meet didi for the very first time.

Dylan and I were stuck in the hospital for extra three days this time as the baby had jaundice and his bilirubin levels didn’t go down as quickly as expected so he had to undergo phototherapy. 😣 The wait to be discharged was horrible each day. We were let down again and again and poor bubba had to undergo the heel prick test each day! He also didn’t bleed easily so they had to really squeeze the blood out of him for the tests. It was so heartbreaking to watch 💔

Now that he’s finally home, I kinda wish he would sleep like he did on that very first night he was born, hahahaha!! This little fellow just doesn’t sleep well at night and it’s driving us nuts. Plus we have a demanding toddler in our hands as well now. You can imagine the chaos we get in the house, huh?

But still, this is the memory we will create as a family together. So, I still wouldn’t change a thing.

We love you, Dylan! Thank you for coming to us and being a part of our family. Praise be to God!

Only 1.5 More Months to Go?!

SERIOUSLY?! Where has the time gone?

But honestly, at this stage now, I kinda can’t wait to pop my second baby out now, lol! Things are really starting to get a little tougher these days. I tend to wake up at 4am for a pee and then have difficulty falling back to sleep for an hour or so almost every night. 😵

And I’m so sick of having to lie down on my left side to sleep now. Most of the time, I just go, “AHHHH, I don’t give a sh*t anymore. Imma just lie down on my right for five minutes!!!” Then end up falling asleep for wayyyy longer than that, hahahahaha! I’m sorry 小 bump no. 2!!! 😢

I just need to work for another four more weeks then I’m off again! Wheeeeee!!!!! Mum and sis will be here end of next month to visit and help out again! Can’t wait for them to be back!! The house is definitely merrier with them around, hehehehehehe… Plus I love it when Naomi spends time with popo and yiyi. It’s so heartwarming to see how much they love her 😍😘

🎵 Can’t wait to see you againnnnnnnn…… 🎶

Definitely wearing that romper way too much hahahaha!! It was gifted to me by my sister and they’re super duper comfy!

Note to self: About time I fix the misaligned photo in the photo frame! 😝

Another one with the cheeky girl!

She’s been learning soooo much these days — especially from daycare. And I’m so pleased for her that she’s finally settled down in daycare now. The carers praised her for adapting and doing so well!  I’m more relieved now as I know that she’s being cared for, her needs taken care of when I’m at work (earning more money 💵 to buy her formula 🍼, hahahahahahaha) and that she’s happy and thriving. 🙂

She’s finally learned how to walk after she started daycare. Perhaps she wanted to catch up with the other kids who are already walking hahahaha! And now she’s learning to talk!! Man, when she says ‘nose’, it’s with an Aussie accent!! 🙄

It’s such a bittersweet feeling to watch her grow and witness her every milestone and progress. As a parent, you’re happy that your child is growing to be healthy and happy. But at the same time, you feel like with their new gained confidence and independence, they’ll depend on you less and less. 😢

Last but not least, a selfie to end the post (as usual, HAHA!) *Snicker* So sorry to do this but this filter does make me look so much more refreshed than I really am in real life. In real life, I just look like a tired, old hag because I really AM tired almost ALL the time. 😴

Quick question for you guys!! I’m thinking of cutting my hair to a lob again some time before baby is due. The longer hair will keep me warm in winter though! BUT BUT BUT, with the confinement thingy going on, I won’t be able to wash my hair for quite a while so I can foresee that it’s gonna be quite gross!! 😱😰

What do you think? Lob or no lob? 🤔

So, I’m Back to Work

Yes, back to the workforce I go, despite the fact that I’ll be delivering another baby in just a few more months, hahahaha!! 😜

I’ve been feeling slightly nervous in the days leading up to yesterday. Mainly because I don’t know how Naomi will cope at daycare. She still had problems settling herself to sleep during snooze times — she’ll only settle down and take her naps/sleep if I lie down next to her. 😣

So, I’ve been trying to get her to get used to sleeping without having me lie down next to her. (Imagine having me squeeze inside her cot with her at night with my baby bump! 🤰🏻 Man, oh, man it’s a torture for BOTH of us!) I slowly transitioned from lying down next to her, to sitting at one end of the cot and singing songs to her to calm her down, to lying on a mattress outside the cot while she’s inside and having me holding her hand.

I was quite surprised when the carers told me that she coped so well yesterday! Ate a good portion of her lunch, had her morning tea, and most of all, took her two naps while she was there! And she didn’t need someone to lie down next to her, lol. But one of the carers had to sit next to the cot while she settled herself down to sleep though, haha!

Last night, I didn’t even have to hold her hand for her to fall asleep, hahaha! I just lied down on the mattress next to her cot and she fell asleep on her own. FINALLY!!! I was always reluctant to try out the CIO (cry-it-out) sleep training method ‘cos she’s the kind of baby who wouldn’t stop crying until you give in. 😓

Taken just as I parked outside the childcare centre. She was clueless as to what was gonna happen next. 😢 She did, however, attend the orientation for 2.5 weeks prior though, but only for an hour or so. Yesterday was her first full day at daycare by herself.

My heart sank as I turned around and saw her looking back at me like that. 💔

Oh, and she’s sporting a fringe ‘cos I cut her hair for her earlier this week, hahahaha! Her front hair was getting so long that they kept irritating her eyes.

Mummy cut my fringe for me today. Do you like it? 💇🏻💁🏻💞💓

My first day back at work was… mundane. Lol! I have after all, been working there for almost a decade already. Everything was like a second nature to me hey. One thing I still hated though, was the traffic jam on my way to work. 😪🔫

I couldn’t have hoped for the time to pass faster while I was in the office, haha. When I finally pulled up at the driveway at home and got down to open the garage door, I saw Mr S place her tiny body on the couch by the window.

ARGHHHH!!!! God, how I missed her.

Happy 1st Birthday, Baby Girl!

Our baby girl just turned ONE today!!! 🎈🎈🎉🎁🎁🎁🎀 I know that every parent says this and I can’t help but feel the same way too – time is zooming past way too fast and we can’t believe she’s one already!!

Honestly, the first few months were tough and painfully slow. And some days ARE still tough these days. But time seemed to pass faster and faster just before she turned one. She was reaching all sorts of milestones in the last two months or so. And it just feels like she has grown up a LOT over the past two weeks. *Sniffs* My baby is all grown up now!

We threw her a birthday party yesterday to celebrate with family members and friends here in Perth. I didn’t really have time to plan anything ‘cos she’s been fighting her naps lately and it drove me nuts almost every day. I seriously think that my level of patience is depleting day by day. 😑 Mr S and I were crazy busy the day before the party as I had to cook the whole day and he had to help me take care of her. We didn’t even manage to clean the house until the morning of the party itself ‘cos we were dead tired the day before. There was dog hair EVERYWHERE and toys scattered all over the floor, junk accumulated from weeks/months ago in the house. Ahhhhh…… it was just chaotic!

BUT, we managed to pull through and we’re quite proud of ourselves, lol!! 😌 *Pats selves on the back*

Naomi’s Birth Story

(NOTE: I initially drafted this post in mid-July but have only managed to complete this post today and it’s September in two days 😑)

It’s 9pm now on a quiet Friday night. Mr S is out playing badminton and Naomi is asleep in the bedroom (hopefully soundly so I can write as much as I’d like to tonight).

I’m writing this post today so I could remember what sort of happened on the day we welcomed our very first child into our lives. I know it’s already been seven and a half months now (and I’m kicking myself for not deciding to write this earlier), but better late than never, right?

Okay, I’m gonna base this whole post on Whatsapp conversation between my mum and I ‘cos I can refer to the timestamp on our messages to figure out what sorta happened throughout the day, hahahaha!! Continue reading Naomi’s Birth Story

Break for Mama Bear

Guess what? Mama bear finally got her well-deserved three-hour break today, hahahaha! Mr S finally decided to bite the bullet and agreed to stay home and babysit the baby while I head out for a high tea session with some colleagues this afternoon.

It was great to be having adult conversations with the girls today. 😏 Although our topics did steer back to parenthood still, but that’s inevitable since most of us have kids now. I had a good time catching up with the girls and three hours flew by just like that.

Throughout the three hours there, I was checking my phone for urgent messages/calls from the husband from time to time, lol. But, I didn’t hear anything from him up till 1.5 hours later.

Mr S sent me this video:

They were on a swing in a park and she was fast asleep in daddy’s arms! *Melts* 😍

Apparently, she didn’t eat much of her lunch, bawled her lungs out, then drank a little bit of milk. Mr S then figured that she might be tired so he took her out for a walk to a local park.

Two minutes into the swaying motion on the swing, she fell asleep, lol!!! 😂 Mr S then had to ninja walk to the nearby bench and sat there, not daring to make any significant moves which might wake her. She ended up sleeping for about an hour!! Well done, daddy!! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

When I finally got home, they were playing happily in the living room and she was laughing! She was well and intact (LOL!!) and they seemed to be having so much fun together, hehehe… Reckon I can have more day-off’s now? 😛

Before I sign off for tonight, recent photos and video for your viewing pleasure!!!

Out shopping for daddy with mummy today. ✌🏼️

Goodnight!!

At 5.5 Months

Hi guys!! Naomi’s fast asleep next to me at the moment. So, YAY!! Let’s do a quick post, shall we?

Our baby girl turned 5 months old two weeks ago. 😚

Time really flies when you’re having fun (or when you’re a full-time mom 😂).

She’s getting more and more interactive and playful these days. And I really, really enjoy looking after her each day! 🙂

I’m kinda amazed that we both survived the first few dreadful weeks unharmed, lol! Look at where we are today!! 😝 She’s turning so sweet these days — gently touching my face while smiling and looking into my eyes. 😍

Taken today while she was taking her noontime nap. Believe it or not but this is an iPhone pic! iPhone cameras are the BEST!

She’s gonna start on solids in two weeks’ time and I’m quite excited about that! ‘Coz right now, she’s still waking up quite often at night for feeds. I don’t know if introducing solids would keep her fuller at night and hence waking up less for feeds? I’ve been patiently waiting for the night when she will sleep through the night to come, but I haven’t been lucky so far. 😂

Meanwhile, I’m losing hair like crazy these days. 😭 It’s quite scary to see the amount of hair I “pull out” whenever I shampoo my hair.

My wrists are still hurting like hell, which really sucks. ‘Cos I have to hold her every day, do chores, cook, wash. Even shampooing my hair can hurt like a @#$*)@%*)! And I think being constantly on my phone whenever my hands are free are not helping at all. ☹️

Thank God Mr S has been very supportive and helpful thus far. I am very, very thankful! 😙

Anyway, it will be a stormy weather in Perth tomorrow. Stay safe and rugged up, guys!

Goodnight! 💜 (Goodnight because Naomi woke up while I was halfway typing this post up and had to continue later at night after my shower, heh.)

Emo Much?

Oh hello!! It’s almost May already! Since when?!

I’m feeling quite good tonight… ‘cos I get to sit down and have some quiet “me-time”. It’s been a while since I last played some songs on my iTunes. The only songs I listen to when I’m in the car nowadays are Beethoven’s classical songs for babies, lol!!

This feels kinda weird but I’m feeling slightly emotional tonight. SO MUCH has happened in the last few months and although I’m sort of into a routine now, I still feel overwhelmed every now and then. Some days seem really long. And some, I just breeze through them like a champ!

I don’t know how to say this. There’s so much I wish to share. But my mind is blank when it comes to writing them down.

I guess the point of this post tonight is to acknowledge my very own presence. I feel like I’ve disappeared for quite a bit while the responsible Jess takes over my body and do what I have to do every day. Right now, before the baby cries for me, I am the carefree, careless Jess.

And before this post turns even more emotional, let’s not go there and let me share a happy photo with y’all! 😀

Caversham with Naomi

Taken last month at Caversham Wildlife Park with my baby 💋

Naomi: One Month Old!

We made it!!! Naomi is officially one month old today, hehehehehe… I’m lucky enough to be able to update my blog this morning as she’s taking her morning nap.

Yes, it’s been a month already since we’ve had our little girl. Time really flies!! Oh, by the way, HAPPY NEW YEAR GUYS!!! How did you guys spend your New Year’s Eve? I spent mine snoring in bed by 9pm lol!

I’m actually looking pretty sane this morning. Had some good shuteye last night in between the feedings. I’m hoping that it’ll only get better from here 🙂 I must admit, the first two to three weeks have been tough on us. But, it would’ve been even tougher if I hadn’t had help from my mum and sister. I think I’ve had it easy compared to new mums who’ve had no helpers at all!

Now that it’s been a month, I’m officially no longer in my “confinement” period, hehehe. I have a confession to make! I’ve actually been really naughty and sneaked out of the house a couple of times during confinement. About 4-5 times WITH Naomi and a couple of other times either by myself or with Mr S or my mum, lol!!! I’ve been “chastised” for quite a few things I’ve been doing or not doing thus far, such as:

  • not swaddling the baby, or not swaddling them the right way (leaving Naomi’s arms out). I know swaddling is supposed to help calm, soothe and settle a baby but Naomi just downright refuses for her arms to be swaddled! She would cry and cry while struggling to have her arms freed! I then did some research on this on the net and it says that some babies really dislikes having their arms swaddled. I know I can’t believe everything I read on the net but hey, freeing her arms in our case works! And I would definitely do or go with something that works for my baby!
  • not layering her with enough clothes. “But it’s 38 degrees Celsius today! And look, she’s sweating all over!” I would protest. It seems that babies need to be wrapped up in layers of clothing everyday, just because. -_- Well, I’m sorry but Naomi will be wearing only her singlet and nappy today because it’s scorching hot outside!
  • not putting pillows or soft items around the baby to make her feel safe while she sleeps. It’s to reduce the risk of SIDS okay!! I’d rather be safe than sorry!
  • not letting her sleep on her tummy. Also to reduce the risk of SIDS. But I must admit, letting Naomi sleep on her tummy helps lessen the effects of her startle reflex. I try not to let her sleep on her tummy at night when both Mr S and I are knocked out (unless she wakes up and cries for a feed). But I do let her sleep on her tummy from time to time in the morning when we are up to monitor/supervise her. Having said that, I wouldn’t recommend any parent to let their babies sleep on their tummies. Just in case!
  • not giving her formula before my milk came in. I did in the end, one night in the hospital as we were desperate and she was really, really distressed and tired by then from the constant crying and hunger, and another time when we got home. I was trying hard to follow everything by the books when it came to breastfeeding. If the pamphlets in the hospital says no formula then NO FORMULA it is! But when you watch your baby cry and cry so helplessly, you just wanna help take the pain away as soon as you can. Thank goodness we’ve become established with breastfeeding now.
  • not giving her the dummy. Again, another thing I was going by the books with. But eventually, I gave in and bought dummies for her. We have four different types of them at home now (we have 8 in total as some come in a pack of 3) and she takes none of them. All she wants is her momma’s good ol’ titty. LOL!

The thing is, everyone will have their own fair bit of “two cents” to give when you have a baby. And they could all be contradicting each other. But only you know what’s best for your baby. I’m not saying don’t take any of the advices given as I’m sure there are constructive advices from people around you – from your mum, medical professionals and whatnot. But take what sounds right for you, go with your own mother’s instincts! After all, it’s your baby and you know what’s best for them!

Anyway, this post has turned out so much longer than I expected! (It’s a good thing, hey?) so I’m gonna end it now with some photos I managed to snap for the past few weeks. Enjoy!

Here’s one I took last Saturday when Naomi was 4 weeks old. Figured I’d snap one with her milestone card earlier ‘cos she was looking so cute that day, haha!

Not to mention, a BIG THANK YOU to everyone who sent their well wishes and gifts and cards from near and afar!! Can’t thank you all enough!!! ❤ ❤ ❤

Last but not least, Happy 1 month old, Naomi!!! You are so loved!
